QSL side Lekhwiya stumbled to a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Iranian side Zobahan in their opening match of their AFC Champions League campaign on Tuesday evening.
Striker Mehdi Rajabzadeh scored at the start of the second half, in what was Zobahan’s best move of the match, straight from the kick-off. The former Iranian international was received a neat through ball, before finishing powerfully from a tight angle past Lekhwiya stopper Amine Lecomte.
Lekhwiya did enjoy the majority of possession on the night, however Djamel Belmadi’s side where unable to produce many clear cut chances. Their best chance came in the 33rd minute when winger Ismaeel Mohammad’s shot from outside the box just sailed over the cross bar.
In the second half, Zobahan held on against the odds for a famous win. Lekhwiya will now have to lift themselves for their next AFC Champions League encounter when they face Zobahan in the return leg in one week’s time.
