Al Rayyan handed Al Ahli a 4-0 defeat in Week 14 of the 2022-2023 season QNB Stars League at the Al Ahli Stadium on Monday.

The Lions roared and rode on a brace from their star striker Yohan Boli to subdue their rivals. Their goals came from Abdulaziz Hatem (16th minute), Jason Vargas (54th minute) and Boli (83rd minute and 90+3 penalty).

Al Ahli began well and had some good chances early on, but their failure to take an early lead saw Al Rayyan hit back much to the delight of the fans who were present in large numbers.

Al Rayyan’s opening goal came from a fine combination following a cross from the left and a defensive lapse which was well picked by Boli to pass on the ball to Hatem who struck successfully.

Three minutes later, Al Ahli had a good chance, but young Oumar Sekou failed to connect a beautiful cross.

Al Rayyan returned hungrier in the second half and Vargas produced a rasping drive from well outside the box to stun a diving goalkeeper to his left.

The 56th minute witnessed the red-card suspension of Al Ahli’s Mohammed Abdullah Al Ishaq.

The excitement continued with both teams making counterattacks. In one such attack, Al Rayyan’s Ali Karami, from the right, provided Boli with a fabulous cross to coolly score his first and the team’s third goal.

Despite the scoreline, Al Ahli continued to battle hard, but lacked finishing.

In the dying-minutes scramble, Boli was felled inside the box and the referee signalled to the spot. Boli scored again to leave the team’s fans all the more thrilled.

The win takes Al Rayyan’s tally to 11 points from 13 matches, while Al Ahli have 17 points, also from 13 games.
