Naim Sliti scored the only goal as Al Ahli defeated Al Wakrah 1-0 in Week 22 of the 2023-2024 season Expo Stars League at the Thani Bin Jassim Stadium of Al Gharafa club on Sunday.

Sliti’s goal came in the 47th minute.

With the victory, Al Ahli finished the season in 10th place with 23 points, while Al Wakrah ended up fourth with 38 points.

The match was evenly balanced for most of the first half, with chances far and in-between as both teams continued to size each other up with little adventure upfront on both sides.

Both teams began to wax stronger with the game, with more chances falling their way and the match opening up more, but the strikers were guilty of profligacy in front of goals as none of the chances was taken and the score remained goalless at half-time.

The second half was, however, a different ball game, as Al Ahli opened the scoring in the 47th minute through Sliti.

The goal seemed to give Al Ahli a shot in the arm as they kept pressurising Al Wakrah’s defence in an attempt to double their lead, all to no avail.

A late drama ensued in the dying minute as Al Wakrah’s Yousef El Khatib was given the marching orders by the referee in the fifth minute of added time for a foul on a goal-bound move.

That decision was the last of the day, as the exciting match and both teams’ league campaign ended with Al Ahli’s narrow victory.
