The 2022-2023 season QNB Stars League’s Week 16 witnessed some changes in the table besides action and excitement in plenty as the race between the teams to surge ahead hotted up.

Al Rayyan drew Umm Salal 1-1
Al Shamal bt Qatar SC 3-0
Al Duhail bt Al Arabi 3-1
Al Gharafa drew Al Ahli 1-1
Al Markhiya lost to Al Wakrah 0-4
Al Sadd bt Al Sailiya 4-0
A total of 19 goals were scored across six matches, with an average of 3.16 goals per game, and the Al Sadd vs Al Sailiya and Al Markhiya vs Al Wakrah fixtures saw the highest margins of victory. Al Shamal, Al Wakrah and Al Sadd kept clean sheets.
The round witnessed two penalty kicks. While Al Shamal’s Matias Nani converted from the spot against Qatar SC, Al Rayyan’s Yohan Boli missed against Umm Salal. There were two red cards, received by Al Arab’s Omar Al Somah against Al Duhail and Al Ahli’s Sofiane Hanni against Al Gharafa.
The Week 16 saw Moroccan Ayoub El Kaabi and Brazilian Vinicius Araujo make their debut in Qatar with Al Sadd and Umm Salal respectively, Jordanian Yassin Al Bakhit returned to the Umm Salal fold after an injury layoff.
Al Duhail (35 points) widened their gap with second-placed Al Arabi to four points, while reigning champions Al Sadd maintained their third position with 28 points.
Al Wakrah got back to the top-four bracket on goal difference with Al Gharafa (fifth place) and Qatar SC (sixth) as all three teams are on 23 points.
Al Ahli remained in seventh place with 21 points after their draw against Al Gharafa and Al Markhiya stood eighth with 15 points.
Al Shamal advanced from 10th to ninth place with 14 points, while Al Rayyan fell to 10th position with 12 points.
Umm Salal progressed from bottom place to 11th with 10 points, while Al Sailiya slid to the 12th and last place with nine points.
Al Duhail, returning from their AFC Champions League 2022 campaign, proved too good for Al Arabi, with Nam Tae-Hee, Almoez Ali and Michael Olunga scoring for them.
Al Arabi’s only successful strike came from Hamed Ismail.
Al Sadd scored a big victory over Al Sailiya (4-0), three of the goals coming in the first half. Akram Afif, Guilherme Torres, Baghdad Bounedjah and Ahmed Sayyar were The Wolves’ scorers.
Al Gharafa and Al Ahli fought hard and played out a 1-1 draw.
Mehdi Tahrat scored for Al Gharafa in the first half and Abdulrasheed Ibrahim equalized for Al Ahli in the second session.
Al Wakrah did well while beating Al Markhiya (4-0) and deservedly got back to the top four.
Mohamed Benyettou (brace), Hazem Shehata and Yousef Abdurisag were The Blue Wave’s scorers.
Qatar SC suffered their second loss in a row and this time it came against Al Shamal (0-3).
Yacine Bammou, Amjad Atwan and Matias Nani found the target for Al Shamal.
Al Rayyan and Umm Salal too played out a 1-1 draw.
Yohan Boli put Al Rayyan ahead before Umm Salal hit back through Yassin Al Bakhit.
List of scorers
Al Duhail’s Kenyan striker Michael Olunga continued to lead the scorers’ list with 11 goals, followed by the trio of Boli, Al Somah and Jacinto Dala of Al Wakrah with nine goals each. Al Arabi forward Yousef Msakni and Bounedjah are on eight goals each.
