Olunga double against Al Shamal and Al Arabi’s defeat take Al Duhail to the top

Al Wakrah shine again with a 5-0 win over Al Sailiya, Al Gharafa draw with Al Rayyan
The 2022-2023 season QNB Stars League Week 11 witnessed some important changes in the table as Al Duhail snatched the lead from Al Arabi, who lost for the first time after the break, while reigning champions Al Sadd and Qatar SC continued their winning ways and moved up in the standings.

A total of 22 goals were scored, and four wins and two draws were recorded.
Al Duhail, Al Sadd and Al Wakrah teams kept clean sheet, one red card was shown – to Qatar SC’s Ibrahim Majed – two penalty kicks were awarded and converted by Al Sadd’s Santi Cazorla and Al Markhiya’s Aymen Hussein, and Al Sailiya’s Moroccan player Ismail Khafi made his debut.
As many as three players scored two goals each – Al Duhail striker Michael Olunga, Al Wakrah defender Lucas Mendes and Al Rayyan striker Yohan Boli.
Al Duhail repeated what they did in the last two rounds by beating Al Shamal 2-0, with Olunga scoring a double, and the victory, their seventh overall, took their tally to 23 points.
Al Duhail dominated the match throughout and had six shots on target, and Olunga became the joint top scorer along with Al Wakrah’s Jacinto Dala on nine goals.
Al Arabi used to regain the lead after Al Duhail went up at the end of many rounds, but this time Al Arabi faltered against Al Sadd in the Qatar Derby as they went down 0-2. Santi Cazorla and Hassan Al Haydous were the scorers for Al Sadd, who had 55 per cent possession.
Al Sadd thus scored their second victory after the break, having beaten Al Rayyan in the Qatar Clasico.
Al Markhiya did well in holding Al Ahli to a 2-2 draw. They trailed by two goals until the last five minutes, but made a stunning comeback, thanks to goals from Driss Fettouhi and substitute Aymen Hussein (penalty).
Al Ahli dropped from fourth to fifth place with 14 points, while Al Markhiya scored their first point after the stoppage and are in ninth place with nine points.
The Al Wakrah vs Al Sailiya and Qatar SC vs Umm Salal matches witnessed the most number of goals (five each).
Al Wakrah compensated for their loss against Al Arabi in the ninth round by beating Al Sailiya 5-0, with four of the goals coming inside 22 minutes in the second half. Al Wakrah are in third place with 18 points and Al Sailiya stood last with four points.
Qatar SC continued their series of positive results, achieving their third victory in a row and the fifth so far. This time, they beat Umm Salal 4-1 despite playing with 10 men for almost half of the second session following the red-card suspension of Ibrahim Majed.
Qatar SC are now placed fourth with 16 points, Umm Salal remained in 10th position with seven points.
In the week’s last match, Al Gharafa and Al Rayyan played out an exciting 2-2 draw. The Algerian duo of Mehdi Tahrat and Ishak Belfodil scored the goals of Al Gharafa, while Yohan Boli netted Al Rayyan’s both goals. Al Gharafa slipped from sixth to seventh place with 13 points, while Al Rayyan remained in 11th spot with five points.
Olunga, Dalla joint top scorers
After Week 11 action, Olunga and Dala have emerged as the joint top scorers with nine goals. Angolan forward Jacinto Dala scored a goal in Al Wakrah’s victory over Al Sailiya.
Al Arabi’s Yousef Msakni is next with seven goals, followed by Al Ahli’s Yazan Al Naimat (six goals) and Al Rayyan’s Yohan Boli, Al Arabi’s Omar Al Somah, Al Gharafa’s Yacine Brahimi and Al Markhiya’s Aymen Hussein.
